Yes, Lewisburg has nice ice sculptures. But, a friend of mine last year sent me pictures of some ICE SCULPTURES! So here they are -- the Ice Sculptures of Ekaterinburg!
Gorgeous!
Beautifully framed.
Gravity-defying!
My favorite!
So, as you can see, lovely and whimsical as Lewisburg's Ice Sculptures are, I think I can safely say Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6194346114807988454.post-80035866849864775822013-02-12T06:43:00.001-05:002013-02-12T06:46:40.127-05:00Ice Sculptures in Lewisburg 2013.
I went to Lewisburg yesterday afternoon and managed to remember to bring my camera! The Lewisburg Ice Festival was last weekend, but the weather has been cold enough that the ice sculptures were still, by and large, intact. Last year, they all melted within a day or two. Some of the sculptures I photographed looked great. Others were showing a bit of wear, especially Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6194346114807988454.post-42137560101399285502013-02-11T16:20:00.000-05:002013-02-11T16:22:27.631-05:00Ice Sculptures in Lewisburg, PA
The Lewisburg Ice Festival was a week ago. Last year, I brought my camera downtown and took pictures of the ice sculptures. I did not do so this year, but since I didn't post last year's pictures, I thought I'd share them with you. Ice sculptors come to Hufnagle Park on Friday evening and create their frosty sensations! Then, participating Lewisburg businesses host a Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6194346114807988454.post-70208444463394549182013-02-09T18:12:00.000-05:002013-02-12T19:25:41.544-05:00Milton Harvest Festival Parade -- Odds and Ends
I took a lot of pictures at the Milton Harvest Festival. So here are a few snapshots to wrap things up:

One of the finest aspects of the Milton Harvest Festival Parade is the number and quality of bands representing different genres and communities in the region. This is, I'm sure, a legacy of festival founder, John Yingling. John has always been an enthusiastic supporter of the big, exciting sounds of marching bands. Naturally, the Milton Harvest Festival is a celebration of this region's rural heritage. We're very lucky to have so many family farms still dotting the landscape. It's so different than the huge factory farms in the Midwest or the endless acres of grapes, strawberries, orange groves, and the like of California. Surely, a Kansas sunflower field is a sight to behold. I'm late enough in publishing these posts about the Milton Harvest Festival, so let's get on with the pictures! Parade day was beautiful. Arts and crafts booths were set up along Broadway and along Bound Avenue. And people lined Front Street all along the parade route to enjoy the spectacle. The Milton Harvest Festival is a week-long celebration. Some of the activities include crowning a Harvest Festival Princess, a foot race, musical entertainment, and, of course, the parade.
This year, the night before the parade, the musical group Country Express Band performed at the Lincoln Park Gazebo.

The 2012 Milton Harvest Festival was held September 7 - 15. This year, the Harvest Festival was dedicated to one of its founders, its long-serving Master of Ceremonies, my former boss, my friend, John Yingling.

I have a pretty small yard. I am trying to plant it with the eventual goal of having no grass. Part of the plan is introducing rocks into the garden. In Pennsylvania, one can get a permit from the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) to collect two tons of rocks for $10.60, including tax. So the other day, I drove to Millmont and got my rock Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6194346114807988454.post-66654969848622767272012-04-04T17:53:00.000-04:002012-04-04T17:55:25.459-04:00The Auction
The Lewisburg Farmer's Market is open every Wednesday and today was a perfect day for wandering around the many food stands and flea market tables. Locals still know the Farmer's Market as "The Auction." When I was little, the Farmer's Market held an auction every Wednesday evening. The auction part was discontinued, but The Farmer's Market, thankfully, lives on.

Every Sunday, two flea markets are open in my area. The Route 15 flea market, former home of the Silver Moon Drive-in Theatre, is in Lewisburg. The other is just off I-180 in between Milton and Watsontown. I call it the Watsontown Flea Market because I don't know its real name or even if it has one. A new flea market just opened in Milton this past Saturday. I have had great success finding family members on the Drozin side of my family. I have had much less success with the Heidemann side. The picture above is my Grandma and Grandpa, Winifred and Thomas Samuel Heidemann, taken in about 1927 in Chicago. Grandpa was born in 1898 in Denmark and had a younger brother named Cai.

Today was a kind of crazy spring day. Cool in the morning, thunderstorms late morning, sunny and warm in the afternoon. I got rained on at the Farmer's Market, then planted a few perennials in the afternoon. Sad news: Gus's Garden Center is going out of business. The flood from last fall was the last straw. They have a great inventory and everything is on Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6194346114807988454.post-39011380617113391302012-03-26T22:58:00.001-04:002012-03-26T22:58:59.994-04:00Vadim
My father had a camera. It was a German model, kept wrapped up in its leather case. The camera had a light meter. Every Christmas, before unwrapping presents, we had to wait, and wait, and wait while the light meter warmed up. No one else knew how to work this odd marvel of technology. No one really wanted to. The camera was my father's, so he took the Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6194346114807988454.post-63854587070971037922012-03-25T19:19:00.002-04:002012-03-25T20:19:08.327-04:00Decorah Bald Eagles
My Mom is totally into watching eagles on the web. One can watch webcams of eagle nests located in Norfolk, Virginia; Channel Island, California; and lots of other places in the USA and around the world. The most famous and most watched of the webcams, for some reason, is Decorah, Iowa. As of this writing, the nest at Decorah contains three eggs. Well, I should have known better. Ever since I've been getting salted herring from Bavaria Sausage, each and every single fish I've cleaned has contained roe. But the pictures of roe sacks I showed you -- no they are not. Turns out they are "milts" or sperm sacks from the males. I thought the texture was a little off, but I didn't really think much about it because of my Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6194346114807988454.post-2735387217944825062012-03-13T02:53:00.002-04:002013-02-08T13:50:55.963-05:00Herring II (Links included!)
I cleaned the other two fish and now I'll show you how to prepare salt herring my father's way.
Here is everything you need: The cleaned herring, cut into morsels. Plain vegetable oil. An onion. Whole black peppercorns. Bay leaf.
Pour oil over the herring to cover. Toss in about 20 - 25 peppercorns and two or three bay leaves.

No other food reflects my Russian heritage more than herring. When I think of my father, I think of herring. Now, you can find herring in sour cream sauce in most grocery stores. It's OK, but it's not herring the way I know it. Two kinds of herring are considered to be acceptable in my family. One is Matjes herring. This comes in small glass jars.
